Resolving a Content ID conflict
What to do when someone else claims your recording.
A conflict means two parties have asserted rights over the same recording. It usually has a mundane cause rather than a malicious one.
Common causes
- The track was previously distributed elsewhere and the old distributor still holds the fingerprint.
- A sample or interpolation another rights holder controls.
- A cover version where the original recording is being matched.
- The same recording delivered twice, through two distributors.
What to do
- If you used a previous distributor, ask them to release the asset. This resolves most conflicts and only they can do it.
- Gather your evidence — the delivery date, the UPC and ISRC, and any licence for samples.
- Open a ticket with that information. BASSMA raises the dispute with the platform.
Do not simply redeliver the track hoping the conflict clears. A second delivery of the same recording tends to create another conflict rather than resolve the first.
