Splitting revenue with collaborators
Royalty splits and how shares are paid.
A split sends an agreed percentage of a recording's earnings to someone else automatically, so nobody has to chase anybody for a transfer every month.
Setting one up
- Open the release and go to its splits.
- Add each collaborator and the percentage they receive.
- Check that the total is exactly 100%.
- Save. Splits apply from the point they are set.
Agree splits in writing before the release goes out. Changing them afterwards only affects future earnings — royalties already reported and paid are not retrospectively redistributed.
What a split does not cover
This splits recording revenue — the money from streams of your master. Publishing, which is the songwriting side, is separate and is administered elsewhere. A producer with a recording split may also be owed a writer share, and the two are handled through different systems.
